Case Study

Brazil

ESS was selected to lead commissioning for eight GE TM2500 gas turbines, providing technical leadership, on-site expertise, and comprehensive testing required to bring the facility online.

Brazil’s heavy reliance on hydroelectric generation makes the country vulnerable to seasonal changes. During a period of unusually low rainfall, national power capacity was severely challenged, creating an urgent need for fast, dependable generation.

To stabilize the grid and support regional demand, natural gas delivered via pipelines from Bolivia was routed to a new facility in Cuiabá, Brazil. The Ambar Energeia plant required rapid installation and commissioning of multiple mobile gas turbine units capable of delivering power quickly and safely.

ESS was selected to lead commissioning for eight GE TM2500 gas turbines, providing technical leadership, on-site expertise, and comprehensive testing required to bring the facility online.

ESS deployed a high-capability, multi-disciplinary team to support the project from installation through to final commissioning.
Our involvement included:

Full Commissioning of 8 x TM2500 Gas Turbines

  • Mechanical installation verification
  • Electrical and control system commissioning
  • Fuel system integration
  • Auxiliary and Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment setup
  • Functional and operational testing
  • Synchronization and grid connection

Expert Team Deployment

ESS fielded 26 highly skilled specialists, including:

  • Lead Commissioning Engineers
  • Mechanical Technicians
  • Controls & Instrumentation Engineers
  • Electrical Engineers (LV/MV/HV)
  • AVR & Excitation Specialists
  • Protection & Grid Compliance Engineers
  • BOP Systems Technicians

This multi-disciplinary structure ensured safe, efficient execution across all commissioning phases.

The project required exceptional coordination due to:

  • The urgent national need for power restoration
  • Tropical environmental conditions
  • Complex logistics around gas supply and infrastructure
  • Strict grid compliance requirements for final certification
  • Operating at scale with eight turbines running in parallel

ESS maintained a disciplined, safety-driven approach throughout, ensuring every system was tested, verified, and commissioned to OEM and international standards.

ESS upheld its outstanding safety record by implementing:

  • Strict permit-to-work and LOTO procedures
  • Quality-controlled installation checks
  • Daily safety briefings and toolbox talks
  • Detailed documentation and reporting
  • Coordination with plant owners, EPC contractors, and regulatory bodies

Across all activities, there were zero LTIs (Lost Time Incidents) testimony to ESS’s strong safety culture and disciplined field execution.

Results & Impact

The newly commissioned Ambar Energeia facility in Cuiabá successfully delivers 200 MW of power to the Brazilian national grid, significantly strengthening reliability during a period of energy scarcity.

ESS delivered:

  1. Full commissioning of 8 TM2500 units
  2. Safe, on-schedule energizations
  3. Zero safety incidents
  4. High-quality testing and documentation
  5. Reliable operation meeting grid compliance standards
  6. Successful integration of natural gas supply and BOP systems

This project demonstrated ESS’s capability to mobilize rapidly, scale operations efficiently, and deliver complex, high-pressure work with precision and professionalism.

Conclusion

The Cuiabá project highlights ESS’s ability to support national-level power stability during critical periods. Our team’s technical expertise, strong safety culture, and commitment to delivering reliable results ensured that the new facility was commissioned quickly and safely  providing urgently needed energy to millions of people.

ESS continues to support global power projects where reliability, speed, and technical excellence are essential.
